Statement on the loss of Robert Urich

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Robert Urich, who has been both a patient and a supporter of our cancer center and its sarcoma program for several years. He used his celebrity, even in a time of great personal difficulty, to advance the public's awareness and science's understanding of sarcoma, and for this we owe him a lasting debt of gratitude. His generosity and positive attitude touched all of us who came in contact with him, and he served as a tremendous example of how to live life to its fullest despite cancer. His memory will live on in the discoveries about sarcoma that are already being made possible by his generosity and leadership. Tomorrow's sarcoma patients, and perhaps those with other forms of cancer as well, will benefit from the fruits of the research that his foundation is designed to support. Robert and his wife Heather established the Urich Fund for Sarcoma Research at the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center over two years ago. Since then, Robert has been a tireless spokesperson for cancer survivors. He was active in raising funds for the U-M, with sales of T-shirts and autographed photos available through his web site. He sponsored the first Robert Urich Golf Classic on November 19, 2001 at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, California. Many celebrities and friends participated, and the proceeds were donated to the Robert and Heather Urich Fund. Recently, Robert appeared on a celebrity version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire," where he won $125,000. He donated the entire amount to the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. His efforts have brought much-needed attention and resources to the fight against all forms of sarcoma.
